Abeyance

Abeyance does not affect abilities which are not activated, such as static abilities and triggered abilities. It also doesn't stop the declaration of attackers or blockers.

Abeyance never prevents mana abilities from being activated.

Abeyance prohibits activated abilities of cards which are not on the battlefield.

This can't be used as a counterspell. It will have no effect on spells which were on the stack when it was cast, nor on those cast in response to it.

Until end of turn, target player can't cast instant or sorcery spells, and that player can't activate abilities that aren't mana abilities.

Black Knight

A source of damage is a permanent, a spell on the stack (including one that creates a permanent), or any object referred to by an object on the stack. A source doesn’t need to be capable of dealing damage to be a legal choice.

Can be used even when there is no damage to prevent. It prevents the next damage (if any) from the source this turn.

City of Brass

If you tap City of Brass while you are casting a spell or activating an ability, its ability will trigger and wait. When you finish casting that spell or activating that ability, City of Brass's triggered ability is put on the stack on top of it. City of Brass's ability will resolve first.

On the other hand, you can tap City of Brass, put its triggered ability on the stack, and then respond to that ability by casting an instant or activating an ability using that mana. In that case, the instant spell or activated ability will resolve first.

The first ability triggers no matter how the land becomes tapped.

Whenever City of Brass becomes tapped, it deals 1 damage to you.

City of Solitude can affect abilities of cards that are not on the battlefield because it prevents players from activating those abilities.

City of Solitude does not stop triggered abilities from being put on the stack. They are never “activated”.

This stops players from activating mana abilities.

Players can cast spells and activate abilities only during their own turns.

Crumble

If the target artifact becomes illegal before resolution, the player does not gain any life.

Destroy target artifact. It can't be regenerated. That artifact's controller gains life equal to its mana value.

Disenchant

This is not modal. If the target changes from an artifact to an enchantment or vice versa, this still destroys it.

Disintegrate

Disintegrated creatures do not go to the graveyard at all before being exiled. They do not trigger abilities which trigger due to a creature going to the graveyard.

The “can’t regenerate” is an effect of Disintegrate and not an effect of the damage. It works even if the damage is prevented or redirected. If redirected, the damage does not take this effect with it.

Disintegrate deals X damage to any target. If it's a creature, it can't be regenerated this turn, and if it would die this turn, exile it instead.

You draw a card regardless of whether the targeted spell was countered or {1} was paid.

Dissipate

If the spell is not countered (because the spell it targets can't be countered), then it does not get exiled.

The card does not go to the graveyard before being exiled.

Dystopia

The permanent is chosen and sacrificed during resolution.

Forest

Forsaken Wastes

The loss of life from targeting this card does not work until after this card enters the battlefield, so you can counter it without losing life.

Effects that replace an event with gaining life (like Words of Worship’s effect does) will end up replacing the event with nothing.

Effects that would replace gaining life with some other effect won’t be able to do anything because it’s impossible for players to gain life.

If a cost includes life gain (like Invigorate’s alternative cost does), that cost can’t be paid.

If an effect says to set your life total to a certain number, and that number is higher than your current life total, that effect will normally cause you to gain life equal to the difference. With Forsaken Wastes on the battlefield, that part of the effect won’t do anything. (If the number is lower than your current life total, the effect will work as normal.)

This has the supertype world. When a world permanent enters the battlefield, any world permanents that were already on the battlefield are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is a state-based action called the “world rule.” The new world permanent stays on the battlefield. If two world permanents enter the battlefield at the same time, they’re both put into their owners’ graveyards.

Players can't gain life.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player loses 1 life.
Whenever Forsaken Wastes becomes the target of a spell, that spell's controller loses 5 life.

Frenetic Efreet

Flying

Harvest Wurm

When Harvest Wurm enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you return a basic land card from your graveyard to your hand.

Heart of Yavimaya

Hydroblast

The decision to counter a spell or destroy a permanent is a decision made on announcement before the target is selected. If the spell is redirected, this mode can’t be changed, so only targets of the selected type are valid.

Hydroblast can target any spell or permanent, not just a red one. It checks the color of the target only on resolution.

If an effect or rule puts two or more cards into the same graveyard at the same time, the owner of those cards may arrange them in any order.

Players may not rearrange the cards in their graveyards. This is a little-known rule because new cards that care about graveyard order haven’t been printed in years.

Say you’re the owner of both a permanent and an Aura that’s attached to it. If both the permanent and the Aura are destroyed at the same time (by Akroma’s Vengeance, for example), you decide the order they’re put into your graveyard. If just the enchanted permanent is destroyed, it’s put into your graveyard first. Then, after state-based actions are checked, the Aura (which is no longer attached to anything) is put into your graveyard on top of it.

The last thing that happens to a resolving instant or sorcery spell is that it’s put into its owner’s graveyard. —Example: You cast Wrath of God. All creatures on the battlefield are destroyed. You arrange all the cards put into your graveyard this way in any order you want. The other players in the game do the same to the cards that are put into their graveyards. Then you put Wrath of God into your graveyard, on top of the other cards.

The “top” card of your graveyard is the card that was put there most recently.

Exile the top creature card of your graveyard: Necratog gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

Nekrataal

Nothing happens if there are no nonartifact, nonblack creatures on the battlefield when Nekrataal enters the battlefield, but if there is one, you must target it, even if it’s a creature you control.

Nevinyrral's Disk

You don't sacrifice Nevinyrral's Disk to activate its ability. It's destroyed as part of the ability's resolution if it's still on the battlefield. If an effect gives Nevinyrral's Disk indestructible or regenerates it, it stays on the battlefield.

Ophidian

An ability that triggers when something “attacks and isn’t blocked” triggers in the declare blockers step after blockers are declared if (1) that creature is attacking and (2) no creatures are declared to block it. It will trigger even if that creature was put onto the battlefield attacking rather than having been declared as an attacker in the declare attackers step.

Whenever Ophidian attacks and isn't blocked, you may draw a card. If you do, Ophidian assigns no combat damage this turn.

Phyrexian Furnace

Pyrokinesis

Each target must be assigned at least 1 damage.

If another effect causes Pyrokinesis to cost more, you must pay that additional cost even if you pay its alternative cost.

You divide the damage as you cast Pyrokinesis, not as it resolves. If any of the targets become illegal, damage is dealt to the other targets as originally assigned. If all targets are illegal, Pyrokinesis doesn’t resolve.
