The decision to counter a spell or destroy a permanent is a decision made on announcement before the target is selected. If the spell is redirected, this mode can't be changed, so only targets of the selected type are valid.

Brainstorm

Draw three cards, then put two cards from your hand on top of your library in any order.

You draw three cards and put two cards back all while Brainstorm is resolving. Nothing can happen between the two, and no player may choose to take actions.

Creatures on the battlefield treat {X} in their mana cost as 0 for the purposes of calculating converted mana costs.

Threads of Disloyalty can’t target a creature with converted mana cost 3 or greater. If it somehow enchants a creature with converted mana cost 3 or greater, Threads of Disloyalty is put into the graveyard the next time state-based actions are checked.

Tokens usually have a converted mana cost of 0.
