Abeyance

Abeyance does not affect abilities which are not activated, such as static abilities and triggered abilities. It also doesn't stop the declaration of attackers or blockers.

Abeyance never prevents mana abilities from being activated.

Abeyance prohibits activated abilities of cards which are not on the battlefield.

This can't be used as a counterspell. It will have no effect on spells which were on the stack when it was cast, nor on those cast in response to it.

Until end of turn, target player can't cast instant or sorcery spells, and that player can't activate abilities that aren't mana abilities.

All Hallow's Eve

Since you can respond to triggered abilities, it is legal to sacrifice creatures using some spell or ability prior to resolving the ability that removes the final counter from All Hallow's Eve.

All Hallow's Eve's triggered ability functions from the exile zone. This ability has an "intervening 'if' clause." It won't trigger at all unless All Hallow's Eve is exiled and has a scream counter on it (which can happen only if it resolves as a spell).

Each creature returned to the battlefield by All Hallow's Eve enters under its owner's control.

The only thing that happens when All Hallow's Eve resolves is that it's exiled with two scream counters on it.

Exile All Hallow's Eve with two scream counters on it.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if All Hallow's Eve is exiled with a scream counter on it, remove a scream counter from it. If there are no more scream counters on it, put it into your graveyard and each player returns all creature cards from their graveyard to the battlefield.

Autumn Willow

This spell can be countered. Shroud does not work until it enters.

{G}: Until end of turn, Autumn Willow can be the target of spells and abilities controlled by target player as though it didn't have shroud.

Balance

Balance doesn't have targets, so permanents that can't be targeted, such as a creature with shroud or protection from white, are valid choices to be sacrificed.

Each type of object is counted during the corresponding part of the process. Cards in hand are counted after lands have been sacrificed, and creatures on the battlefield are counted after cards have been discarded. Thus, a land creature sacrificed to the first part of the spell would not be counted when determining how many creatures are on the battlefield for the last part.

First the player whose turn it is chooses which lands (if any) to keep, then each other player in turn order does the same. Each player will know the choices made by the players who chose before them. All of the unchosen lands are then sacrificed simultaneously. Then the process is repeated for cards in hand, except that no cards are revealed until all players have chosen what to discard, at which point those cards are all discarded simultaneously. Lastly, the process is repeated for creatures, and players will again know earlier choices made when deciding what to sacrifice. All of the unchosen creatures are then sacrificed simultaneously.

Each player chooses a number of lands they control equal to the number of lands controlled by the player who controls the fewest, then sacrifices the rest. Players discard cards and sacrifice creatures the same way.

Balduvian Horde

You choose whether to discard or not on resolution. If not, then you sacrifice this card. You can choose to not discard even if you no longer control this card on resolution.

Baron Sengir

The Baron’s ability will only regenerate creatures with type “Vampire,” regardless of whether the creature has “Vampire” in its name.

Although Baron Sengir is now a Vampire, it still can’t regenerate itself.

If you tap City of Brass while you are casting a spell or activating an ability, its ability will trigger and wait. When you finish casting that spell or activating that ability, City of Brass's triggered ability is put on the stack on top of it. City of Brass's ability will resolve first.

On the other hand, you can tap City of Brass, put its triggered ability on the stack, and then respond to that ability by casting an instant or activating an ability using that mana. In that case, the instant spell or activated ability will resolve first.

The first ability triggers no matter how the land becomes tapped.

Whenever City of Brass becomes tapped, it deals 1 damage to you.

Deflection

If there is no other legal target for the spell, this does not change the target.

Once the spell resolves, the new target is considered to be targeted by the deflected spell. This will trigger any effects which trigger on being targeted.

The target of a spell that targets another spell on the stack can be changed to any other spell on the stack, even if the new target will resolve before the spell does.

This does not check if the current target is legal. It just checks if the spell has a single target.

This only targets the spell being changed, not the original or new target of the spell it is affecting.

You can choose to make a spell on the stack target this spell (if such a target choice would be legal had the spell been cast while this spell was on the stack). The new target for the deflected spell is not chosen until this spell resolves. This spell is still on the stack when new targets are selected for the spell.

You can’t make a spell which is on the stack target itself.

You choose the spell to target on announcement, but you pick the new target for that spell on resolution.

If a spell targets multiple things, you can’t target it with Deflection, even if all but one of those targets has become illegal.

If a spell targets the same player or object multiple times, you can’t target it with Deflection.

Change the target of target spell with a single target.

Disenchant

This is not modal. If the target changes from an artifact to an enchantment or vice versa, this still destroys it.

Dissipate

If the spell is not countered (because the spell it targets can't be countered), then it does not get exiled.

The card does not go to the graveyard before being exiled.

Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, exile it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard.

Drain Life

Cost reducers can be used to reduce the X part of the mana cost.

You may gain up to the total toughness of the creature even if it was already damaged.

Spend only black mana on X.
Drain Life deals X damage to any target. You gain life equal to the damage dealt, but not more life than the player's life total before the damage was dealt, the planeswalker's loyalty before the damage was dealt, or the creature's toughness.

Earthquake

Whether or not a creature is without flying is only checked on resolution.

Earthquake deals X damage to each creature without flying and each player.

Enduring Renewal

Enduring Renewal only affects creature cards that are “drawn”. It doesn’t affect cards that are put into your hand from your library, or from anywhere else.

If the creature is only a creature due to an effect, it still goes to your hand. This includes any way to animate a card.

Token creatures cease to exist if they leave the battlefield, so this effect will not let you get them in your hand.

The last ability is now a triggered ability, not a replacement effect. That means your opponent has the opportunity to remove the card from your graveyard while the triggered ability is still on the stack.

If, after the last ability triggers, the creature card is removed from your graveyard in response, it won’t be returned to your hand.

Unless something weird happens, the card you draw as a result of the second ability will be the card you revealed.

Play with your hand revealed.
If you would draw a card, reveal the top card of your library instead. If it's a creature card, put it into your graveyard. Otherwise, draw a card.
Whenever a creature is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, return it to your hand.

Erhnam Djinn

If there are no creatures your opponent controls to target at the beginning of your upkeep, ignore this ability.

If you have more than one Djinn, you can have all of them target the same creature with their ability.

In multiplayer games you can choose a different player’s creature each upkeep. You are forced to pick a creature that some opponent controls if there is at least one creature on the battlefield that is a legal target.

At the beginning of your upkeep, target non-Wall creature an opponent controls gains forestwalk until your next upkeep. (It can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Forest.)

Fallen Angel

Flying
Sacrifice a creature: Fallen Angel gets +2/+1 until end of turn.

Fireball

Fireball's damage is divided as Fireball resolves, not as it's cast, because there are no choices involved. The division involves only targets that are still legal as Fireball resolves.

For example, if X is 5 and you choose three target creatures, Fireball has a total cost of {7}{R} (even though its mana cost is just {5}{R} and its mana value is 6). If those creatures are all still legal targets as Fireball resolves, it deals 1 damage to each of them.

You can target more than X creatures. However, if the number of legal targets at the time Fireball resolves is greater than X, none of them will be dealt any damage.

You may cast Fireball with zero targets, regardless of the value chosen for X. If you do so, it will not be a targeted spell, and no damage will actually be dealt when it resolves.

This spell costs {1} more to cast for each target beyond the first.
Fireball deals X damage divided evenly, rounded down, among any number of targets.

As long as Guardian Beast is untapped, noncreature artifacts you control can't be enchanted, they have indestructible, and other players can't gain control of them. This effect doesn't remove Auras already attached to those artifacts.

Hydroblast

The decision to counter a spell or destroy a permanent is a decision made on announcement before the target is selected. If the spell is redirected, this mode can’t be changed, so only targets of the selected type are valid.

Hydroblast can target any spell or permanent, not just a red one. It checks the color of the target only on resolution.

Choose one —
• Counter target spell if it's red.
• Destroy target permanent if it's red.

Icy Manipulator

Once a player announces that they're casting a spell or activating an ability, no player may take other actions until the spell or ability has been paid for. Notably, other players can't try to tap that player's permanents to stop them from paying {T} or to stop them from producing enough mana.

Incinerate

Regeneration abilities that would affect that creature can still be activated; they just won’t do anything. The creature can’t be regenerated for any reason, even if an effect other than Incinerate would deal lethal damage to it or otherwise destroy it.

Incinerate deals 3 damage to any target. A creature dealt damage this way can't be regenerated this turn.

Infernal Contract

If you attempt to halve a negative life total, you halve 0. This means that the life total stays the same. A life total of -10 would remain -10.

Infernal Spawn of Evil

Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror enters tapped.
{7}, {T}, Sacrifice Mirror Mirror: Choose target player. At the beginning of the next end step, exchange life totals with that player, exchange control of all permanents you and that player control, and exchange cards in your hands, cards in your libraries, and cards in your graveyards.

Mirror Universe

When the life totals are exchanged, each player gains or loses the amount of life necessary to equal the other player’s previous life total. For example, if player A has 5 life and player B has 3 life before the exchange, player A will lose 2 life and player B will gain 2 life. Replacement effects may modify these gains and losses, and triggered abilities may trigger on them.

If an effect says that a player can’t lose life, that player can’t exchange life totals with a player who has a lower life total; in that case, the exchange won’t happen.

{T}, Sacrifice Mirror Universe: Exchange life totals with target opponent. Activate only during your upkeep.

Mountain

Natural Balance

You are not required to find all the basic lands you are entitled to.

Each player who controls six or more lands chooses five lands they control and sacrifices the rest. Each player who controls four or fewer lands may search their library for up to X basic land cards and put them onto the battlefield, where X is five minus the number of lands they control. Then each player who searched their library this way shuffles.

Necropotence

If a discarded card isn't put into your graveyard (due to an effect such as that of Obstinate Baloth) or leaves your graveyard (perhaps because another effect returned it to your hand), it won't be exiled.

If you discard a card with madness and wish to cast it, Necropotence's ability won't exile that card. If you don't wish to cast it, you choose whether it ends up exiled or in your graveyard.

Necropotence's last ability creates a delayed triggered ability that will put the exiled card into your hand. That ability still triggers even if Necropotence is removed from the battlefield before your end step.

You can't look at the cards exiled by the last ability while they're face down.

Skip your draw step.
Whenever you discard a card, exile that card from your graveyard.
Pay 1 life: Exile the top card of your library face down. Put that card into your hand at the beginning of your next end step.

Nether Shadow

Note that bringing the Shadow back onto the battlefield from the graveyard is not a spell, it is an ability. It can't be countered with something that counters spells.

Since it enters due to triggering at the beginning of upkeep, it is not possible to get an infinite loop with four Nether Shadows.

A card is "above" another card in your graveyard if it was put into that graveyard later.

If an effect or rule puts two or more cards into the same graveyard at the same time, the owner of those cards may arrange them in any order.

Players may not rearrange the cards in their graveyards.

Say you're the owner of both a permanent and an Aura that's attached to it. If both the permanent and the Aura are destroyed at the same time (by Akroma's Vengeance, for example), you decide the order they're put into your graveyard. If just the enchanted permanent is destroyed, it's put into your graveyard first. Then, after state-based actions are checked, the Aura (which is no longer attached to anything) is put into your graveyard on top of it.

The last thing that happens to a resolving instant or sorcery spell is that it's put into its owner's graveyard. Example: You cast Wrath of God. All creatures on the battlefield are destroyed. You arrange all the cards put into your graveyard this way in any order you want. The other players in the game do the same to the cards that are put into their graveyards. Then you put Wrath of God into your graveyard, on top of the other cards.

Haste
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Nether Shadow is in your graveyard with three or more creature cards above it, you may put Nether Shadow onto the battlefield.

Order of the White Shield

Protection from black
{W}: Order of the White Shield gains first strike until end of turn.
{W}{W}: Order of the White Shield gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

Personal Incarnation

The owner of the Incarnation loses life when it is destroyed, not the controller. So if you control your opponent's Incarnation you can let it die to make them lose life.

You do not lose life if this card is exiled or sent someplace without going to the graveyard first.

{0}: The next 1 damage that would be dealt to Personal Incarnation this turn is dealt to its owner instead. Only Personal Incarnation's owner may activate this ability.
When Personal Incarnation dies, its owner loses half their life, rounded up.

Plains

Each part of Pox’s effect is processed separately. For each part, first the player whose turn it is makes all necessary choices (such as which cards to discard), then each other player in turn order chooses, then the actions happen at the same time. Then Pox’s effect moves to the next stage.

The losses, discards, and sacrifices are rounded up. For example, if you have 5 life, you’ll lose 2 life, leaving you at 3 life. (Five divided by three is one and two-thirds. Rounding that up to the nearest whole number gives you two.)

The number you need to lose, discard, or sacrifice isn’t calculated until it’s time to perform that part of the effect. For example, if your opponent casts Pox and you discard Dodecapod as part of Pox’s discard effect, Dodecapod will be put onto the battlefield instead of into your graveyard. Then, when determining how many creatures you need to sacrifice, the Dodecapod is taken into account.

Each player loses a third of their life, then discards a third of the cards in their hand, then sacrifices a third of the creatures they control, then sacrifices a third of the lands they control. Round up each time.
