Banefire

Banefire can be targeted by spells that try to counter it regardless of what the value of X is. If X is 5 or more, those spells will still resolve, but the part of their effect that would counter Banefire won’t do anything. Any other effects those spells have will work as normal.

If its target is illegal by the time Banefire tries to resolve, the spell isn’t countered, but it doesn’t resolve. The target won’t be dealt damage.

To determine whether it can be countered and its damage can be prevented, Banefire checks the number you chose for X, not the amount of mana you actually spent or the amount of damage it will actually deal.

Coat of Arms

If a creature has more than one creature type, and one of those types matches the creature you are calculating for, then count that creature. Only one type needs to match in order to get counted.

If you have a creature with more than one creature type, count all creatures which have either creature type.

Sharing multiple creature types doesn't give an additional bonus. Coat of Arms counts creatures, not creature types.

Each creature gets +1/+1 for each other creature on the battlefield that shares at least one creature type with it. (For example, if two Goblin Warriors and a Goblin Shaman are on the battlefield, each gets +2/+2.)

Consume Spirit

If the targeted permanent or player is an illegal target by the time Consume Spirit would resolve, the entire spell doesn’t resolve. You won’t gain any life.

The amount of life you gain is equal to the number chosen for X, not the amount of damage Consume Spirit deals (in case some of it is prevented).

Spend only black mana on X.
Consume Spirit deals X damage to any target and you gain X life.

Counterbore

Counterbore has no effect on cards on the battlefield that have the same name as the targeted spell.

If the spell’s controller isn’t the same as its owner (due to Commandeer, for example), it won’t be exiled. The spell is countered and put into its owner’s graveyard. Then the spell’s controller’s graveyard, hand, and library are searched.

If the targeted spell can’t be countered (it’s Vexing Shusher, for example), that spell will remain on the stack. Counterbore will continue to resolve. You still get to search for and exile all other cards with that name.

In most cases, Counterbore will exile the targeted spell. Its first sentence counters the spell, which puts it into its owner’s graveyard. Its second sentence then removes it from the graveyard. However, there are some exceptions to this, as listed below.

The cards you’re searching for must be found if they’re in the graveyard, because that’s a zone everyone can see. Finding those cards in the hand and library is optional, though.

Counter target spell. Search its controller's graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with the same name as that spell and exile them. Then that player shuffles.

They envy the life-giving heat so much that they tear it from those who still possess it.

Some wizards compete not to summon the most interesting creatures, but to create the most interesting aftereffects when a summons goes awry.

Essence Scatter

A “creature spell” is any spell with the type creature, even if it has other types such as artifact or enchantment. Older cards of type summon are also creature spells.

Furnace of Rath

If a spell or ability damages multiple things, divide up the damage before applying this effect. This means you can’t normally end up with an odd amount of damage on something.

If you have two of these on the battlefield, the damage is multiplied by 4.

The multiplied damage counts in all ways as if it came from the original source. Furnace of Rath is not the source.

The trample rules cause damage to be divided before it is doubled.

If multiple effects modify how damage will be dealt, the player who would be dealt damage or the controller of the creature that would be dealt damage chooses the order to apply the effects. For example, Mending Hands says, “Prevent the next 4 damage that would be dealt to any target this turn.” Suppose a spell would deal 5 damage to a player who has cast Mending Hands targeting themselves. That player can either (a) prevent 4 damage first and then let Furnace of Rath double the remaining 1 damage, taking 2 damage, or (b) double the damage to 10 and then prevent 4 damage, taking 6 damage.

If a source would deal damage to a permanent or player, it deals double that damage to that permanent or player instead.

Incinerate

Regeneration abilities that would affect that creature can still be activated; they just won’t do anything. The creature can’t be regenerated for any reason, even if an effect other than Incinerate would deal lethal damage to it or otherwise destroy it.

Incinerate deals 3 damage to any target. A creature dealt damage this way can't be regenerated this turn.
