These spirits of the air are winsome and wild, and cannot be truly contained. Only marginally intelligent, they often substitute whimsy for strategy, delighting in mischief and mayhem.

Animate Artifact

Target artifact is now an artifact creature with both power and toughness equal to its casting cost; target retains all its original abilities as well. Has no effect on artifact creatures.

A noncreature permanent that turns into a creature can attack, and its {T} abilities can be activated, only if its controller has continuously controlled that permanent since the beginning of their most recent turn. It doesn't matter how long the permanent has been a creature.

This card has been returned to its original functionality. If it is enchanting an artifact that's already a creature, it won't change its power and toughness.

Enchant artifact
As long as enchanted artifact isn't a creature, it's an artifact creature with power and toughness each equal to its mana value.

Animate Dead

Any creature in any graveyard comes into play on your side with -1 to its original power. At end of game, or if this enchantment is discarded without removing target creature from play, target creature is returned to its owner's graveyard. Target creature may be killed as normal.

Abilities such as shroud and protection function only on the battlefield unless otherwise specified. A creature card with shroud may be targeted by Animate Dead, and Animate Dead will become attached to the creature that enters the battlefield.

Animate Dead is an Aura, albeit with an unusual enchant ability. You target a creature card in a graveyard when you cast it. It enters the battlefield attached to that card. Then it returns that card to the battlefield, and attaches itself to the card again (since the card is a new object on the battlefield). Animate Dead itself never moves into a graveyard during this process.

If Animate Dead isn't on the battlefield as its triggered ability resolves, none of its effects happen. The creature card won't be returned to the battlefield.

If the creature put onto the battlefield has protection from black—or if the creature can't legally be enchanted by Animate Dead for another reason—Animate Dead won't be able to attach to it. It will be put into the graveyard as a state-based action, causing its delayed triggered ability to trigger. When the trigger resolves, if the creature's still on the battlefield, its controller will sacrifice it.

Once the creature is returned to the battlefield, Animate Dead can't be attached to anything other than it (unless Animate Dead somehow manages to put a different creature onto the battlefield). Attempting to move Animate Dead to another creature won't work.

Enchant creature card in a graveyard
When Animate Dead enters, if it's on the battlefield, it loses "enchant creature card in a graveyard" and gains "enchant creature put onto the battlefield with Animate Dead." Return enchanted creature card to the battlefield under your control and attach Animate Dead to it. When Animate Dead leaves the battlefield, that creature's controller sacrifices it.
Enchanted creature gets -1/-0.

Animate Wall

Target wall can now attack. Target wall's power and toughness are unchanged by this enchantment, even if its power is 0.

This is a change from the most recent wording. As was the case in the past, Animate Wall can now enchant only a Wall.

Enchant Wall
Enchanted Wall can attack as though it didn't have defender.

Ankh of Mishra

Ankh does 2 damage to anyone who puts a new land into play.

It determines the land's controller at the time the ability resolves. If the land leaves the battlefield before the ability resolves, the land's last controller before it left is used.

This triggers on any land entering. This includes playing a land or putting a land onto the battlefield using a spell or ability.

Whenever a land enters, Ankh of Mishra deals 2 damage to that land's controller.

Armageddon

Armageddon Clock

Put one counter on Armageddon Clock during each of your upkeeps. At the end of your upkeep, each player takes damage equal to the number of counters on the Clock. Any player may spend o4 during any upkeep to remove a counter.

Players can remove as many counters as they can pay for each turn.

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a doom counter on Armageddon Clock.
At the beginning of your draw step, Armageddon Clock deals damage equal to the number of doom counters on it to each player.
{4}: Remove a doom counter from Armageddon Clock. Any player may activate this ability but only during any upkeep step.

Aspect of Wolf

Target creature's power and toughness are increased by half the number of forests you have in play, rounding down for power and up for toughness.

The effect is continuously updated based on the number of Forests you control at any given time.

Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +X/+Y, where X is half the number of Forests you control, rounded down, and Y is half the number of Forests you control, rounded up.

The bane of all artificers, the legendary Atogs devoured intricate tools to further their own twisted growth.

Atog

o0: +2/+2. Each time you use this ability, you must sacrifice one of your artifacts in play.

Sacrifice an artifact: Atog gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

Bad Moon

Badlands

Counts as both mountains and swamp and is affected by spells that affect either. If a spell destroys one of these land types, this card is destroyed; if a spell alters one of these land types, the other land type is unaffected.

Land type changing effects that change a dual land's land type will remove the old land types completely. Text-changing effects that just change one of the two land types will leave the other type unaffected.

This card is a Mountain and a Swamp even while in the graveyard, library, or any other zone.

This has basic land types, but it isn't a basic land. Things that affect basic lands don't affect it. Things that affect basic land types do.

This has the mana abilities associated with both of its basic land types.

Balance

Whichever player has more lands in play must discard enough lands of his or her choice to equalize the number of lands both players have in play. Next, equalize the cards in hand and then creatures in play the same way. Creatures lost in this manner are considered buried.

Balance doesn't have targets, so permanents that can't be targeted, such as a creature with shroud or protection from white, are valid choices to be sacrificed.

Each type of object is counted during the corresponding part of the process. Cards in hand are counted after lands have been sacrificed, and creatures on the battlefield are counted after cards have been discarded. Thus, a land creature sacrificed to the first part of the spell would not be counted when determining how many creatures are on the battlefield for the last part.

First the player whose turn it is chooses which lands (if any) to keep, then each other player in turn order does the same. Each player will know the choices made by the players who chose before them. All of the unchosen lands are then sacrificed simultaneously. Then the process is repeated for cards in hand, except that no cards are revealed until all players have chosen what to discard, at which point those cards are all discarded simultaneously. Lastly, the process is repeated for creatures, and players will again know earlier choices made when deciding what to sacrifice. All of the unchosen creatures are then sacrificed simultaneously.

Each player chooses a number of lands they control equal to the number of lands controlled by the player who controls the fewest, then sacrifices the rest. Players discard cards and sacrifice creatures the same way.

Basalt Monolith

Basalt Monolith's last ability can untap it as often as you can pay for it. If you believe you've found a way to generate an unbounded amount of mana with it, you're probably right.

Benalia has a complex caste system that changes with the lunar year. No matter what the season, the only caste that cannot be attained by either heredity or money is that of the hero.

Benalish Hero

A maximum of one nonbanding creature can join an attacking band no matter how many creatures with banding are in it.

Creatures in the same band must all attack the same player or planeswalker.

If a creature with banding attacks, it can team up with any number of other attacking creatures with banding (and up to one nonbanding creature) and attack as a unit called a “band.” The band can be blocked by any creature that could block a single creature in the band. Blocking any creature in a band blocks the entire band. If a creature with banding is blocked, the attacking player chooses how the blockers’ damage is assigned.

If a creature in combat has banding, its controller assigns damage for creatures blocking or blocked by it. That player can ignore the damage assignment order when making this assignment.

Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Birds of Paradise

Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.

Black Knight

First strike (This creature deals combat damage before creatures without first strike.)
Protection from white (This creature can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything white.)

Black Vise

If opponent has more than four cards in hand during his or her upkeep, Black Vise does 1 damage to opponent for each card in excess of four.

You choose one opposing player as it enters and it only affects that one player. This choice is not changed even if Black Vise changes controllers. It becomes useless but stays on the battlefield if that player leaves the game.

If the chosen player has four or fewer cards in their hand as Black Vise's ability resolves, the ability just won't do anything that turn.

As Black Vise enters, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.

Black Ward

Target creature gains protection from black.

Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has protection from black. This effect doesn't remove Black Ward.

Blessing

Enchant creature
{W}: Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

Blue Elemental Blast

Counters a red spell being cast or destroys a red card in play.

The decision to counter a spell or destroy a permanent is a decision made on announcement before the target is selected. If the spell is redirected, this mode can't be changed, so only targets of the selected type are valid.

Blue Ward

Target creature gains protection from blue.

Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has protection from blue. This effect doesn't remove Blue Ward.

Bottle of Suleiman

o1: Flip a coin, with opponent calling heads or tails while coin is in the air. If the flip ends up in opponent's favor, Bottle of Suleiman does 5 damage to you. Otherwise, a 5/5 flying Djinn immediately comes into play on your side. Use a counter to represent Djinn. Djinn is treated exactly like a normal artifact creature except that if it leaves play it is removed from the game entirely. No matter how the flip turns out, Bottle of Suleiman is discarded after use.

The coin is flipped on resolution and not on declaration of the ability.

{1}, Sacrifice Bottle of Suleiman: Flip a coin. If you win the flip, create a 5/5 colorless Djinn artifact creature token with flying. If you lose the flip, Bottle of Suleiman deals 5 damage to you.

Braingeyser

Brass Man

Brass Man does not untap as normal; you must pay o1 during your upkeep phase to untap it.

Reworded so that it triggers only once at beginning of upkeep, instead of being an activated ability usable any time during your upkeep. You can no longer make infinite combos with this ability.

Brass Man doesn't untap during your untap step.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay {1}. If you do, untap Brass Man.

Burrowing

Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has mountainwalk. (It can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Mountain.)

Castle

Your untapped creatures gain +0/+2. Attacking creatures do not get this bonus.

Untapped creatures you control get +0/+2.

Celestial Prism

T: Provides 1 mana of any color. This use is played as an interrupt.

Channel

Until end of turn, you may add colorless mana to your mana pool at a cost of 1 life per point of mana. These additions are played with the speed of an interrupt. Effects that prevent or redirect damage may not be used to counter this loss of life.

Once your life total is 0, you can't pay any more life, even if you've somehow not lost the game yet.

Until end of turn, any time you could activate a mana ability, you may pay 1 life. If you do, add {C}.

Chaoslace

Changes the color of one card either being played or already in play to red. Cost to cast, tap, maintain, or use a special ability of target card remains entirely unchanged.

Target spell or permanent becomes red. (Its mana symbols remain unchanged.)

Circle of Protection: Black

o1: Prevents all damage against you from one black source. If a source does damage to you more than once in a turn, you must pay 1 mana each time you want to prevent the damage.

A source of damage is a permanent, a spell on the stack (including one that creates a permanent), or any object referred to by an object on the stack. A source doesn’t need to be capable of dealing damage to be a legal choice.

Can be used even when there is no damage to prevent. It prevents the next damage (if any) from the source this turn.

{1}: The next time a black source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage.

Circle of Protection: Blue

o1: Prevents all damage against you from one blue source. If a source does damage to you more than once in a turn, you must pay 1 mana each time you want to prevent the damage.

{1}: The next time a blue source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage.

Circle of Protection: Green

o1: Prevents all damage against you from one green source. If a source does damage to you more than once in a turn, you must pay 1 mana each time you want to prevent the damage.

{1}: The next time a green source of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage.

Circle of Protection: Red

o1: Prevents all damage against you from one red source. If a source does damage to you more than once in a turn, you must pay 1 mana each time you want to prevent the damage.

Loses a counter even if it is affected by a Fog-like effect which prevents it from dealing damage.

Clockwork Beast’s last ability resolves, you can choose to put fewer than X +1/+0 counters on it.

If Clockwork Beast has seven or fewer +1/+0 counters on it when its last ability resolves, it can wind up a maximum of seven such counters on it. If it has seven or more +1/+0 counters on it, the ability will have no effect.

This is a change from the most recent wording. Now, if some other spell or ability causes +1/+0 counters to be put on Clockwork Beast, it can wind up with more than seven such counters on it.

Clockwork Beast enters with seven +1/+0 counters on it.

Clone

Upon summoning, Clone acquires all characteristics, including color, of any one creature in play on either side; any creature enchantments on original creature are not copied. Clone retains these characteristics even after original creature is destroyed. Clone cannot be summoned if there are no creatures in play.

Any "enters" abilities of the copied creature will trigger when Clone enters the battlefield. Any "as [this creature] enters" or "[this creature] enters with" abilities of the chosen creature will also work.

If the chosen creature is a token, Clone copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put it onto the battlefield. Clone is not a token.

If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Clone), then your Clone enters as whatever the chosen creature copied.

If the chosen creature has {X} in its mana cost (such as Protean Hydra), X is considered to be zero.

Clone copies exactly what was printed on the original creature and nothing more (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.

If Clone somehow enters at the same time as another creature, Clone can't become a copy of that creature. You may choose only a creature that's already on the battlefield.

You can choose not to copy anything. In that case, Clone enters as a 0/0 Shapeshifter creature, and is probably put into the graveyard immediately.

Clone's ability doesn't target the chosen creature.

You may have Clone enter as a copy of any creature on the battlefield.

Cockatrice

Flying
Any non-wall creature blocking Cockatrice is destroyed, as is any creature blocked by Cockatrice. Creatures destroyed in this way deal their damage before dying.

The ability destroys the creature at the end of the combat, which is after all first strike and normal damage dealing is done. This means that a creature may have to regenerate twice to survive the combat, once from damage and once again at end of combat.

Flying
Whenever Cockatrice blocks or becomes blocked by a non-Wall creature, destroy that creature at end of combat.

Conservator

Copy Artifact

Select any artifact in play. This enchantment acts as a duplicate of that artifact; it is affected by cards that affect either enchantments or artifacts. The copy remains even if the original artifact is destroyed. Enchantments on the original artifact are not copied.

The artifact to copy is chosen at the time this card enters. If there is no valid artifact to choose, then this card enters as an enchantment that has no effect.

The copy is both an artifact and an enchantment, so it is an artifact-enchantment (perhaps even an artifact-creature-enchantment). It can be affected by anything which affects either type of permanent.

The copy of the artifact is not still blue. It copies the color of the thing it is copying.

You may have Copy Artifact enter as a copy of any artifact on the battlefield, except it's an enchantment in addition to its other types.

Counterspell

Counters target spell as it is being cast.

The most terrifying thing about the Craw Wurm is probably the horrible crashing sound it makes as it speeds through the forest. This noise is so loud it echoes through the trees and seems to come from all directions at once.

The spirits of Argoth grant new life to those who repent the folly of enslaving their labors to devices.

Crumble

Buries target artifact. Artifact's controller gains life points equal to target artifact's casting cost.

If the target artifact becomes illegal before resolution, the player does not gain any life.

Destroy target artifact. It can't be regenerated. That artifact's controller gains life equal to its mana value.
